Clay pellets with a grit size of between 1 and 10 mm are manufactured at the Saterland-Scharrel site. The product requirements relate to the humidity and consistency of the granules. The surface of the clay globules has to be dry whilst the clay must not be dry throughout or burnt. The current drying process takes place in a cylindrical rotary kiln. In future the grit range will be reduced to approx 1 mm to 5 mm.
In a study it was researched which alternative drying process is suited to ensuring the desired product quality and at the same time results in markedly lower dust generation as well as lower energy costs.
